Some old fiction made newly available!I noticed that Sidetangent Fiction Magazine hasn't been around for a while, so I'm making this post to make my short story (that was published there) available for people to read. If they want to.
It's not quite 2000 words, about rat brothers in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. It's dark and a little sad, but what else is new? Check out Brothers.

Well! As I am wont to do every other year or so, I forgot about my "blog" here. Not a big deal, I'm sure. To be fair, I was busy having a new baby and buying a house. Living the dream, hooray debt! Anyway... You're waking up now... In a... Field? There's a breeze, it's daytime. You're getting up, walking. I don't know. I don't know! How am I supposed to know, you didn't look! Yeah, you're still walking, towards some trees? There's, there's... No, it just looked like... What... Uh, well, you're... No, no, nothing like that... No.
No, no, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry. I'm not going to tell you that. No. No, I'm really, really sorry. I know, I- I know, and I'm sorry but what I'm seeing... No, no. I'm sorry but no one should have to hear that about themselves from a complete stranger like this. Sorry, I... I have to go. Bye. "Oh wait, nevermind. I'm okay, everybody's fine, I thought it was bad, but, I think I'll be okay."
"What is your name sir?" "Uh, Mathaeus. There is a guy here, he's hurt pretty badly. He tried to kidnap my daughter, but I tailed him & overcame him. I think he might be dead." "Where are you, what's the address?" "I have no fucking idea." "Okay, town & state?" "Uh, I'm really not sure, can't you just trace the call or something? GPS on the phone? This is the guy's phone, by the way. I'm not sure what happened to mine." "Okay, what is the condition of the man? How old is he?" "Uh, he's pretty fucked up. -Yes, baby, we'll get going soon. Don't touch that.- I'd say he's about 30. I think I choked him to death. Shit." "Alright, sir, I need you to stay where you are. Do I hear a child in the background? Your daughter?" "Yeah, that's Zaili. She's only 4, fuck, I think I killled a guy in front of my kid!" "Please relax sir, what is your full name?" "Uh, seriously?" "Yes, sir, Mathaeus..?" Mathaeus hung up the phone and looked at his daughter. Zaili was a typical 4 year old girl; pig-tails, velcro sneakers, and shorts under her flower-print dress. She was leaning against the rear bumper of an SUV and idly kicking the white gravel road. On the other side of the vehicle, a few feet off the road, lay a rather still man... I awoke in the mist. I was alone, but I could feel another. I felt it through the pain. Oh hell, the pain. It was everywhere, all over. A dull ache here, a piercing shot there. I touched, I felt. Shit, this hurts.
Still, I could stand. Was I hurt? Obviously, but I couldn't see it. The walls here, holy hell the walls are huge. They go up past my line of sight into the mist. Sculptures and gates? Was I here or am I here? Shit, this hurts. Been updating the site a little bit, added a Links page so one can see what I'm into & all, if they like. Also, feel free to play some Galaga or Ms Pacman. I have them here for my kids. The other sites I've found them hosted on had questionable ads around them...
Anyway, I wrote this short story for my ENC 1102 class. It's supposed to be post-modern. I got a low A. I'm pretty happy with it, myself. Check out Castles. Hey, been a while. I've been busy with all kinds of things. I've been writing a lot, planning to get a little bit more ambitious with producing content, on & off site. Way to set the bar, I know. =D Anyway, I made this dungeon using the charts in the 4e D&D DMG. Also GIMP. Yeah, letters. I imagine this place as Cthulhu Temple meets Toxic Waste Facility meets FF7 Mako... Cave? Also, green. Feel free to take it for personal use, just be sure to give credit where it's due! I'd love to know what you use it for, too. One more thing! Check out the Sidetangent Fiction Magazine, from the producers of Gamerstable! It has short stories relating to RPG's & the like, some really good stuff. A story I wrote, called "Brothers," will be featured this week. Here's a permalink to the story: http://sidetangent.com/Fiction/brothers/ Until next time. |
RPG materials & musings, along with some fiction, poetry, & other randomness. Updated when you least expect it.
